The true measure of success in applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy is seeing a client gain the skills and independence needed to thrive.
In 2011, ABS Kids started with a single center in Salt Lake City with a mission to help children on the autism spectrum thrive in their environments. As a day one employee, Jeremy Smith started his career as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) and 15 years later, he’s helping find the next generation of great technicians.
We sat down with Jeremy to discuss his journey, his lasting bond with a former client, and what makes ABS Kids a unique place to build a career.
How Jeremy’s ABA Journey Began
Every career has a starting point. For Jeremy, the journey began unexpectedly long before he was professionally involved with autism services. While living in Idaho, he had an opportunity to work with an adult on the autism spectrum. After just six months, he knew he had discovered his calling. This pivotal experience set him on a dedicated path to becoming an RBT.
When Jeremy joined ABS Kids, then known as Applied Behavioral Strategies, he brought that newfound passion with him. Here, he found an environment that nurtured his skills and amplified his impact. Comprehensive training equipped him to become a highly effective RBT, and he soon witnessed substantial, life-changing progress with his clients. He experienced the deep satisfaction of “fading services,” a term for when a client achieves their goals and no longer requires therapy.
As Jeremy explains, “We’re not chiropractors. We do want to work ourselves out of a job.” This philosophy underscores a commitment to genuine client independence, which is a core value at ABS Kids.
Building Meaningful Connections
One of the most powerful examples of Jeremy’s impact is his relationship with a former client, Ben. When they started working together, Ben’s conversational abilities were limited, often focused on a single topic. Jeremy and the clinical team collaborated to expand his communication skills and build his confidence in social settings.
Today, Ben’s growth is remarkable. He navigates conversations on a wide variety of topics with ease, and his confidence in social situations has blossomed. Katie, Ben’s mother, shares how Jeremy’s presence made a unique difference in her son’s journey: “Most of Ben’s therapists were young women, but having Jeremy a ‘dude’ really made such a positive impact on Ben’s care. Their dynamic allowed Ben to connect in a different way, giving him not just a mentor, but a friend who understood him and could relate to his interests.”
Five years after their professional work ended, Jeremy and Ben remain in close contact, planning outings and cheering each other on.
“I tell people that he’s my former client, current best friend,” Jeremy says with pride. He watches as Ben now holds two jobs and sets his sights on new goals, including becoming a manager. This enduring friendship is a testament to the meaningful connections forged through dedicated, compassionate therapy.
From RBT to Recruiter: A New Chapter
After years of direct client work, Jeremy’s career evolved. Now serving as a recruiter for ABS Kids, he uses his firsthand experience to identify and mentor future RBTs. His deep understanding of the role gives him a unique lens for recognizing the qualities that lead to success.
So, what does it take to be an exceptional RBT? Jeremy looks for candidates who bring something unique to the table, whether it’s a talent for music, art, or storytelling. He values individuals who are willing to be silly and meet clients on their level to build trust and rapport.
He fondly recalls playing tag and wearing a unicorn mask with a young client to foster engagement. “You just have to kind of let go and be comfortable with the silliness,” he advises. “You’re gonna see a lot more buy-in with your client if you can do that.”
This ability to create individualized, meaningful connections is at the heart of effective ABA therapy and is a quality ABS Kids actively seeks in its team members.
The ABS Kids Difference: Training and Growth
Having spent more than 15 years with the company, Jeremy’s journey from RBT to recruiter is a clear illustration of the career pathways available at ABS Kids. His experience highlights why our organization is a leader in the ABA field.
When asked what sets ABS Kids apart, Jeremy points to two key factors:
- Unmatched Training: “Our training is second to none,” he states. He is confident that new hires are equipped with the knowledge and practical skills to start making an impact from day one. This robust preparation ensures that both technicians and clients are set up for success.
- Paths for Advancement: ABS Kids is committed to fostering professional growth. “If you are looking for the path to become a BCBA, we’re the place to be,” Jeremy says. “ABS Kids is gonna be the most supportive and provide you with the best training so that you can become a BCBA.”
The company culture is built on supporting team members as they pursue their career goals, whether that means advancing into clinical leadership, operational roles, or other specialized positions.
