The holiday season is here – and that means plenty of gifts under the tree. But when shopping for a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), their perfect gift may not be the season’s hottest toy.
Melanie Hamblin, Director of ABA Services at ABS Kids, provides tips to Nashville’s NewsChannel 5 that can make gift-giving more enjoyable now and throughout the year.

“We want to think of things that are actually going to be functional and helpful for them rather than causing more challenges,” Melanie explains. Children with autism ASD may have sensory or social demands that will determine the best present.
Some tips Melanie shared when considering gifts:
- Think in senses, not ages: Consider what the child likes, including lights, soft fabric, or weighted blankets. If you are shopping for a family member or friend, ask their caregiver about the child’s sensory preferences.
- Supporting Routines and Independence: Children with ASD often prefer predictability. Visual timers or picture-based instructions can help a child thrive in their independence.
- Build connection, not pressure: Look for games and activities that focus on cooperation instead of competition.
- Inclusive experiences: Gift cards to museums with quiet hours or swim lessons can help the entire family enjoy an outing.
