Any holiday, especially with fireworks, can come with unique challenges for families with autistic children. Maren Jacobson, ABS Kids Senior Vice President, talked with KUTV in Salt Lake City about how parents can help elevate these stressors for their children and themselves.
Visual Planning Makes a Difference
A simple way to reduce stress is by creating a visual schedule for the day, showing each step from morning to celebration. Visual plans help autistic children—and all kids—feel less anxious by knowing what’s coming next.
“A lot of times those behaviors, like meltdowns and tantrums, are communicative of ‘I’m stressed out and I’m anxious about what’s coming next.’ Having that visual representation can be really supportive for both neurodivergent and neurotypical children as well.”
